Evaluation Experiment for Sign Language Learning Support Tool

Den-en Chofu Gakuen University and KAIT Launch Evaluation Experiment for Sign Language Learning Support Tool — Pioneering a New Approach to Sign Language Education with AI —

The Department of Information Engineering (Tanaka Laboratory) and the Department of Information Media (Nishimura Laboratory) have initiated an evaluation experiment for the jointly developed “Sign Language Learning Support Tool” in collaboration with the Kawana Seminar of the Department of Social Welfare, Faculty of Human Welfare at Den-en Chofu Gakuen University.

Details:
This innovative tool leverages AI to automatically assess and evaluate learners’ sign language movements, addressing a key challenge in sign language education: the difficulty of objectively reviewing one’s own expressions. By analyzing learners’ gestures and providing feedback on recognition results, the tool enables efficient self-study and review at home.

In this evaluation phase, students from the Kawana Seminar who are studying sign language will participate to verify usability and functional effectiveness, while also providing feedback from real learning environments. Based on these findings, the project aims to release the tool for general learners in the future.

Additionally, the development of reference sign language videos and the acquisition of data required for the sign language recognition model have been supported by KCC Co., Ltd.
